Are you interested in growing or raising your own food? Are you looking to have a more sustainable lifestyle? Are you burdened by debt or trying to live within your means? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the Farhner Homestead is the right place for you.
The Farhner Homestead exists in the intersection of homesteading, sustainability, and financial responsibility. These things are not often found together, but our mission is to bring them into balance for you. Here’s how:
- We want to empower you to start your own homestead, whether it’s in the narrow strip of grass behind your house, or on the 5 acre lot that has you wondering where to start.
- We want to help you do it sustainably, so you can both save money and help provide a better world for your children.
- And finally, we want to help you do all this within your means, without going into debt, so that you can become financially successful too!
The Farhners
We are Ben and Arielle Farhner. We were married in July 2012, and have a wonderful daughter, Eila, who was born in October 2014.
Our dream is to purchase at least 20 acres with cash, and build an earth-sheltered, custom designed “hobbit hole” as our house, mortgage-free, using sustainable methods and materials. We want enough land to provide food and livelihood for ourselves, with pasture for chickens, goats, pigs, and possibly cows; orchards of fruit trees and fields of berry bushes accompanied by hives of honey bees; and large vegetable gardens to provide us with produce year-round.
For now, though, that’s still just the dream. We’re currently living on 1/3 acre in a 1922 farmhouse, learning how to remodel a house and honing our permaculture gardening techniques.
